Idea
Background
Financial Litteracy is a topic of the official curriculum of Switzerland. The Verein Finance Mission is working in tandem with the teachers of Switzerland and financed by the VSKB Kantonalbanken to teach Kids between 13-15 how to properly spend their money. There was a call for game ideas for games to be used in Lehrplan 21 where Blindflug Studios participated.
Gameplay:
In Finance Mission Heroes you play a normal teen by day, hero by night. The evil Dr. Violetta is sending out robots every night to steal the cities money out of the banks. You are one of the brave teens opposing her, trying to destroy 10 robot bosses, earning money, and finally confronting Dr. Violetta. But you need to manage your equipment, one-use items and the randomly generated level layout to finish your mission before its time to head home. And you will need to make good financial strategies to succeed, since items vary in durability and repair costs.
Design:
The key design priciple of Finance Mission Heroes was always to never replace teachers. Instead it was designed to be most enjoyable, badass after-school homework assignment, which then can be used the next day in conjunction with professionally made teaching materials to teach the fundamentals of budgeting and financial decision making.
The game achieves this by incorporating all themes of the curriculum within its game mechanics: you get thaugt about initial costs, recurring costs, one time use items, vanity items and many more themes while outfitting your hero. This base is then used to explain the more complex topics within that setting.
