Background:
Stellar Commanders started its life as First Strike Armageddon, a multiplayer sequel to First Strike. The game garnered some attention like winning the GDC Pitch in 2019 and was scouted by Apple as a potential launch title for the upcoming Apple Arcade. Within 4 months, the game became Stellar Commanders, a brand new IP, developed for the Apple Arcade global launch.
Gameplay:
In Stellar Commanders, you play as the commander of one of three powerful factions: The United Coalition of the World, the Sons of Barovia or the Jin Guo Corporation. You select your own army out of a deck of 8 units, either common shared or specialised that are faction specific, and try to beat other players while attacking, conquering or defending planetoids before they explode. The more you play for your faction the more you raise in their ranks and the cooler units you are rewarded with.
Design:
The challenge for Stellar commanders was to create a deep and meaningful strategy game that captures the real-time thrill while still being playable within a few minutes. Over 50+ different units offer a wide range of strategies and a strong meta with counter plays for each faction. As you progress through the game, your strategies are rewarded with deeper unit choices that offer exciting combos that require more precision and skill to execute. 5 different planets each possess different starting parameters and benefits.
